About

I work in clay using hand-building techniques. Exploring the texture of clay and the dynamics experienced in building are stimulating in combination. The clay work starts with drawing, in clay, with models and on paper, no one way being the preference to another.

The actual making, rolling out, joining and decorating the new surfaces is a reflexive stage in the creation of a piece or series of pieces. The stretching and broken edges contribute to my thoughts on the shapes I want to make as significantly as the initial drawings.

Intaglio, silk screen, embossing and relief printing processes are equally as important processes as making a form is to me. When I print onto and into surfaces I am always exploring colour, pattern and form and that’s as true when the surface is clay as it is when it’s paper. What is obviously different, with the ceramic outcomes, are the implications of these new descriptions, once applied to the clay, on what I am building. The forms are a response as described above but they are also personal reflections of the studies of places, buildings, and growth and decay that I am inspired by.

My studio is near the centre of Birmingham, UK.
